Professor Watson Discusses Abolishing Private Prisons in Interview
04/13/2021
Professor Fran Watson, ’80, talked about private prisons and criminal justice reform during an interview with Pressenza, an international press service. The piece, written by Perfecto Caparas, LL.M. ’05, was published April 11.
Professor Watson said in the interview that corporations should not be permitted to make money from inmates and their families, and that re-entry opportunities for inmates need to be addressed. Criminal justice reform needs to include law enforcement and more funding for courts that are working under heavy caseloads.
Caparas is Associate Director of Graduate Programs at IU McKinney, where he also is a Doctor of Juridical Science candidate.
Professor Watson is the founding director of the Wrongful Conviction Clinic at IU McKinney. She is a clinical professor of law and teaches in Law and Forensic Science, and Lawyering Practice, along with the Wrongful Conviction Clinic.
