After earning his Master of Laws degree from IU McKinney, Sheikh Muhammad Mohsin, LL.M., ‘18, is now busy applying his criminal law expertise in multiple fronts in his home country Pakistan. These include teaching, writing, training law enforcers, litigation, and law school administration.
Blackstone School of Law, a recognized teaching center of the University of London, appointed Mohsin as principal for a few months. He serves as an adjunct faculty member and works with the law school’s clinic. The clinic litigates rape, murder, dacoity, drugs, child abuse, domestic violence, extrajudicial killings, family, and civil cases. Mohsin also trains law enforcers in criminal investigation, counterterrorism, and forensic evidence. Mohsin credits the legal education he received at IU McKinney with giving him the foundation to do all these things.
“I proudly say that IU McKinney, during the course of my stay there and even after, channeled my professional skills that otherwise would have been raw,” he said. As an LL.M. student, Mohsin focused on criminal investigation and prosecution, counterterrorism, international criminal law, and international human rights law. His studies at IU McKinney “positively and practically developed my talent that is leading me in my practical life and career,” he said. “It has broadened my vision, outlook and even has set my goals much higher. I’m thankful to IU McKinney for making me who I am, and I ever will be.”
Mohsin has benefitted from working with IU McKinney alumni. Ujala Akram, LL.M. ’07, serves as founding dean at Blackstone School of Law. She and Mohsin joined forces and created the law firm, Blackstone Law and Associates. The firm petitions the high court for constitutional writs in family and criminal cases like child abuse, domestic violence, and extrajudicial killings.
Aside from being a member of the Punjab Bar Council-Advocate High Court, Mohsin also as an adjunct professor at the University of the Punjab, where he teaches criminal investigation, and organized crime and money laundering for the university’s Master of Science in criminology and security studies program. Mohsin conducted a seminar-workshop for members of Pakistan’s Punjab Emergency Services on the role of first responders at an arson/blast/crime scene.
Aside from training law enforcers and battling cases in court, Mohsin also writes a column in the Daily Parliament Times. He tackles various issues such as following:
- Pakistan’s Efforts Repudiated by FATF
- Dignity-Enshrined but Restricted
- Flawed Investigation: An Impediment to Criminal Justice System
- Food Adulteration Seeks Attention
- Replacing Custodial Torture as an Interrogation Technique
Mohsin earned his Bachelor of Laws and Master of Science degree in criminology and security studies from the University of the Punjab. He also has a post-graduation diploma in international affairs and in forensic science and relevant laws from the same university.
