Jimmie McMillian, '02, Discusses Diversity Role, Love of Indy 500

Jimmie McMillian, ’02, talks about how he fell in love with motorsports and his goals for his new role as senior legal counsel at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and chief diversity officer for Penske Entertainment Corp. in two videos on the Indianapolis Star’s website. McMillian talks about falling in love with racing, and his goals for his role as chief diversity officer in two videos. The story traces his life as McMillian and his mother fled Chicago to escape his alcoholic and abusive father to his success as a lawyer.
McMillian serves as president of the Indianapolis Bar Association. He was named to the 2018 list of Most Influential Black Lawyers by Savoy Magazine. IU McKinney honored him with its Distinguished Alumni Award in 2017, and he received the Maynard K. Hine Medal for service to the IUPUI campus in 2013. Among other honors, he has received the National Bar Association’s Presidential Award in 2007, Barnes & Thornburg’s Pro Bono Attorney of the Year award during his time at the firm, and the Honorable Carr L. Darden Leadership Award. He was president of the law school’s alumni association in 2011-2012 and served as president of the Neal-Marshall Indiana University Alumni Association in 2013. While in law school, he served as a barrister of the Moot Court Team and was a member of the Trial Advocacy Team.
