Professor Magliocca to Discuss Amend with American Constitution Society during Event
07/13/2021
The American Constitution Society student group at IU McKinney is hosting a screening and question and answer session of the first episode of the docuseries, Amend: The Fight For America. The event will take place August 15 at Black Acre Garden.
Amend is about the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which promised liberty and equal protection for all citizens when it was ratified in 1868. The docuseries was released in February 2021 on Netflix. Professor Magliocca appears in the first episode of the series which discusses John Bingham, the drafter of the Equal Protection Clause. One of the executive producers had read Professor Magliocca’s book on Bingham and was interested in talking with him. He was later invited to New York City to be filmed at CBS Studios talking about Bingham’s life and career. The series, hosted by Will Smith, who also served as an executive producer, aims to challenge views about American history and how the Fourteenth Amendment impacts the ongoing fight for equality. He is the author of four books, the latest of which, The Heart of the Constitution: How the Bill of Rights Became the Bill of Rights, was published by Oxford University Press in 2018. He also is the author of over 20 articles on constitutional law and intellectual property. He was named to the 2020-2021 class of fellows for the Fred W.
