IU McKinney Law Student Farrah Alexander Wins IndyBar Competition
10/14/2021
Farrah Alexander, a 1L at the IU McKinney School of Law, won the IndyBar Health Care & Life Sciences Section Writing/Oral Competition.
In this inaugural competition, students were asked to consider an area of maternal and child health that Indiana could improve upon and discuss a law that could be used to implement changes necessary to better serve Indiana women and children. You can read Alexander’s winning essay here.
“After the birth of my second child, I had my own brush with maternal mortality which opened my eyes to what a horrific problem it is in Indiana,” Alexander said. “Most pregnancy-related deaths are preventable, an I would love to see Indiana become more proactive in preventing these deaths and saving Hoosier mothers’ lives.”
The writing prompt—and the competition itself—was created by Angela Covele, coordinator for the IU McKinney Hall Center for Law and Health as a project for the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) graduate-level interdisciplinary leadership training program at Riley Child Development Center.
"I am excited to see a McKinney student win this statewide competition,” Covele said. “Farrah's topic and bill proposal is exactly what we were hoping for. I hope this will strike up constructive conversations in our state legislature and ultimately improve the outcome in maternal mortality in Indiana."
Alexander's winning essay earned her a chance to have lunch with IndyBar President Jimmie McMillian, ’02, and members of the IndyBar Health Care & Life Sciences Section Executive Committee and a discount on future IndyBar Review course fees.
