12/09/2021
Professor Fran Watson viewed a video of a man who was booked into the Harrison County Jail that depicted his treatment before he died. Reporters from the Indianapolis Star received the video and sought the opinions and expertise of lawyers and medical experts regarding what happened to the man.
Jerod Draper was stripped of his clothes and put in a medical isolation cell when he began experiencing effects of a methamphetamine overdose. He was not given medical treatment before he died. Professor Watson said in the story that watching the video made her “skin crawl with horror.” A story about Draper and his death published December 8. (subscription required) Richard Waples, ’84, also was interviewed for the story.
Professor Watson, ’80, is the founding director of the Wrongful Conviction Clinic at IU McKinney. She is a clinical professor of law and teaches in Law and Forensic Science, and Lawyering Practice, along with the Wrongful Conviction Clinic.
