Katie Whitley, '22, Winner of IU McKinney Faculty Prize

Katie Whitley, ’22, is the winner of the IU McKinney Faculty Prize for 2022. The award was announced during the Evening of Celebration on May 13 at Newfields.
Whitley has been named a Skadden Fellow, a nationally known prestigious public interest fellowship. She is one of 28 fellows from 19 different law schools who will partner with legal services nonprofits across the country. Whitley will partner with Indiana Legal Services to create the first school-based civil legal aid initiative in the Indianapolis region designed to serve low-income families with school-aged children experiencing housing and economic instability. Her fellowship will also include engaging students in creating Know Your Rights educational materials in housing law and public benefits.
In addition, Whitley served as a Program on Law and State Government fellow for 2021. The PLSG symposium was on the topic: “Gun Laws and Gun Violence: State Governments Making a Difference.” She also served as symposium editor for the Indiana Law Review. The ILR symposium was on the topic: “Transportation Infrastructure Law and Policy: The Road Forward.” Whiley also was active in the Health and Human Rights Clinic’s work helping people facing eviction.
The Faculty Prize is bestowed annually upon a graduating student of the IU McKinney faculty’s choosing. Faculty members donate to the prize and the student receives a monetary award in addition to a plaque.
