06/02/2022
New York University School of Law appointed Professor Ahmed Altawyan, S.J.D., ’17, as a visiting academic fellow for Spring 2023.
“Such an appointment as a fellow at NYU School of Law is an excellent opportunity to join senior scholars and practitioners globally in academic activities such as fora, lectures, colloquia, seminars, and conferences,” Altawyan said. In this role, he will conduct research and pursue his own scholarship under NYU’s International Tax Program.
The fellowship provides him the opportunity “to learn about current law research from a global perspective and on a wide range of topics,” Altawyan said.
Altawyan has presented research projects, including drafting a comprehensive study for foreign investors on Saudi income tax law and the application of legal matters in zakat and income tax in Saudi courts and tribunals. Altawyan serves as an associate professor of law at Saudi Electronic University. He is also a member of IU McKinney’s Dean’s Global Advisory Council.
Altawyan defended his dissertation titled “Reinforcing Saudi Commercial Arbitration Law in the Global Community: Challenges and Possible Modernization” at IU McKinney in January 2017. Professor Frank Emmert served as his supervisor.
Altawyan holds a Master of Laws degree from the Southern Methodist University, a Master of Saudi Law degree from the Higher Judicial Institution, Riyadh, and a bachelor’s degree in Islamic Law from Al-Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud University, Saudi Arabia. He is also a legal advisor on different legal topics such as tax, zakat, international commercial arbitration, and Islamic finance to government agencies in Saudi Arabia. He has taught courses at several universities and arbitration centers and is a speaker at conferences and events worldwide. In addition, he has produced various publications and presentations on a wide range of sharia and legal topics.
