Two IU McKinney Alumni Published in Same Issue of European Journal of Law Reform
10/11/2022
Sarah Plew, LL.M. ‘20, and Jared Thomas, J.D. ‘21, had articles published in the same issue of the European Journal of Law Reform. Both were students of IU McKinney Professor Frank Emmert.
Plew’s article, “Make America Rich Again,” is about the national security exemption in the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade and the recent liberal use of the exemption. “I saw this pattern as a coverup for the real nationalist motives behind State decisions,” Plew said. She currently works for the Indiana Attorney General’s Office and is finalizing her admission to the New York Bar. She plans to move into international legal work.
Thomas’s article, “Dispute Resolution under USMCA,” discusses in the dispute resolution differences between the North American Free Trade and the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. Thomas is Director of Operations & Engagement for Boilermaker Alliance, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that utilizes the name-image-likeness of Purdue student-athletes to champion other charitable organizations. The experience of writing the paper taught him, Thomas says, that “even when you feel you're out of your depth--put your best foot forward and you may just surprise yourself!”
Professor Emmert serves on the editorial board of the European Journal of Law Reform, where another IU McKinney alumnae, Salma Taman, LL.M. ’09, serves as associate editor.
