11/18/2022
LL.M. candidate Anamika Krishnan was selected as the recipient of the Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer Memorial Award, presented by the Sarada Krishna Satgamaya Foundation for Law and Justice. Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer (1915 - 2014) was a pioneer of the legal-aid movement in India. Anamika’s parents received the award in her absence at a ceremony held at the Kerala High Court Auditorium on November 12, 2022. The award recognizes proficiency in law and justice and was conferred for graduating in law first out of 1500 students at Mahatma Gandhi University in India.
Krishnan wrote and spoke about the contributions of Justice Iyer to human rights jurisprudence, obtaining first place in an essay writing and elocution competition held in the State of Kerala as part of the 17th International Book Festival in 2014. Justice Iyer presented Krishnan with the award. “Securing an award in Iyer’s name now makes it special and assures me that I'm following his advice on human rights and social justice,” said Krishnan.
In addition, she had received an endowed award created in the name of Ms. Fathima Rehman, a former subordinate judge of the Indian judiciary. The award goes to a woman every year who has contributed to society through academic excellence. The cash award was presented by the District Muslim Women's Association in Ernakulam, India.
In September 2022, Krishnan organized a two-day virtual symposium on “The Future of Bioethics in the Post-Pandemic Era.” The event, which was sponsored by the State Government of Kerala, featured presenters from around the world, including IU McKinney Professor Jennifer Drobac as well as current LL.M. student Denise Chisveto and SJD student Perfecto Caparas (LL.M. ’06).
