Professor Dutton Receives EPIC Grant to Attend ASIL Annual Meeting

IU McKinney Professor Yvonne Dutton was awarded an IUPUI EPIC Taking Action Challenge Grant, which made it possible for her to attend the American Society of International Law annual meeting. Professor Dutton serves as co-chair of ASIL’s Women-in-International Law Group.
During the annual meeting, Professor Dutton served as moderator on a panel during the Women-in-International Law Group’s business meeting, which highlighted the winners of the group’s 2022 scholarship prize. The prize aims to highlight and promote excellence in international law scholarship involving women and girls, gender, and feminist approaches. Professor Dutton served as chair of the scholarship prize committee. In addition, Professor Dutton was one hosts for the group’s luncheon where its Prominent Woman in International Law Award was presented to Gillian Triggs, UN Assistant Secretary-General and Assistant High Commissioner for Protection with UNHCR. Professor Dutton serves on the committee to select the honoree. In the photo, Professor Dutton (right) has just presented the award to Triggs.
EPIC, which stands for evidence-informed promotion of inclusive climate, grants must be devoted to programming, conference travel, or other activities aimed at directly or indirectly supporting women faculty at IUPUI.
Professor Dutton is a well-known international law scholar. Her scholarship examines questions about international cooperation and the role and effectiveness of international institutions in deterring and holding accountable those who commit crimes of international concern. In 2022, Professor Dutton was elected vice chair of the American Society of International Law’s Women in International Law Interest Group. She also has served as ASIL’s Midwest vice chair. In May 2013, her book entitled Rules, Politics, and the International Criminal Court: Committing to the Court was published by Routledge.
IU McKinney Dean Karen E. Bravo and Vice Dean Cynthia Adams, J.D. ’83, also attended the annual meeting, which took place March 29 through April 1 in Washington, D.C. IU McKinney Doctor of Juridical Science candidate Irene Massimino, LL.M. ’05; and Master of Laws student Adeleye Adekunbi also attend the meeting.
