A song purported to be a collaboration between two artists was all the rage on streaming services until it was removed because it was a fake that had been engineered with AI tools. An article in Billboard magazine features commentary from Jonathan Faber, J.D. ’99.
It’s unclear whether the vocals were created with AI or if the entire song was created by a machine based upon a prompt, the article said. The incident is causing concern in the music industry.
“The ability to create a new work this realistic and specific is disconcerting and could pose a range of threats and challenges to rights owners, musicians, and the businesses that invest in them,” Faber said in the story. He is the founder of Luminary Group and an attorney who specializes in protecting the likeness rights of famous individuals. “I say that without attempting to get into even thornier problems, which likely also exist as this technology demonstrates what it may be capable of.”
Faber teaches Intellectual Property: Right of Publicity at IU McKinney as an adjunct professor.
