Guest Lecturers Visit Professor Edwards' Final International Law Class
05/04/2023
U.S. Consul General David Hodge and U.S. Diplomat Dr. Alfred Boll served as guest lecturers during Professor George Edwards’ final International Law class at IU McKinney. Professor Edwards is retiring at the end of the 2022-2023 academic year.
Consul General Hodge serves in São Paulo, Brazil and is a member of the State Department Senior Foreign Service. During his visit, he addressed a wide range of international law and diplomacy topics, including Brazil's presidential elections, U.S./Russian Federation high-profile prisoner swaps, the conflict between the Russian Federation and Ukraine, climate, and even the World Cup.
Dr. Boll, who spoke with the class via Zoom, addressed the international law doctrine of diplomatic protection, that permits a country to bring international law claims against another country that harms its citizens. Boll has had several State Department postings and also served as a delegate of the International Committee of the Red Cross. Boll lectured in one of Professor Edwards’ classes in 1997, during his first year of teaching at IU McKinney.
Professor Frank Sullivan and Assistant Director of Student Recruitment Nicole Burts, J.D. ’17, also visited the class.
