Judge Jane Magnus-Stinson to Take Senior Status in Summer 2024

Judge Jane Magnus-Stinson has announced she will take senior status beginning July 1, 2024. A story about Judge Magnus-Stinson’s decision appeared in Indiana Lawyer. (subscription required)
Judge Magnus-Stinson was sworn in as a judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana on June 14, 2010. With the support of Senators Richard Lugar and Evan Bayh, she was nominated by President Obama on January 20, 2010, to the seat vacated by Judge Larry J. McKinney upon his assumption of senior status. She became the chief judge in November 2016 and served in that role until March 2021. Prior to her appointment as district judge, Judge Magnus-Stinson served as a magistrate judge in the Southern District of Indiana from January 2007 to June 2010.
Magnus-Stinson was appointed then twice elected judge of the Marion Superior Court serving from 1995-2007 in the Criminal Division, Room 6. She served as associate presiding judge during 2005-06. As a superior court judge, she tried over 100 jury trials, of which over 45 were murder trials. From 1997-2001, Magnus-Stinson served as the supervising judge of the Marion Superior Probation Department providing policy and programming supervision for a department of 150 employees serving 10,000 probationers. In that role, she helped create the Youth Empowerment Program providing volunteer mentors to young offenders.
Judge Magnus-Stinson is a member of the IU McKinney Board of Visitors.
