11/20/2023
Professor Irene Massimino, LL.M. ’05 and a current Doctor of Juridical Science candidate at IU McKinney, presented before the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium, on November 7. Professor Massimino participated as a legal expert on accountability for international crimes and her work in Armenia for the last three years.
During the conference, titled “The Rights of Nagorno Karabakh Armenians and the European Union,” Professor Massimino talked about the necessity of repatriating the Armenian prisoners of war, captives, and political prisoners illegally held by Azerbaijan. She said “asking the Armenians of Artsakh to live under the Azerbaijani regime is to dictate them an unappealable death sentence. Failure to act against the expulsion from their original land is condoning genocide. Given the current scenario, the international community now faces its responsibility in failing to prevent the crimes perpetrated against the Armenian people.”
A human rights lawyer, professor, and activist, Professor Massimino teaches in the Department of International Education of the National University of Tres de Febrero and at the National University of José C. Paz, Argentina. She is also currently teaching as an adjunct professor at IU McKinney School of Law.
Professor Massimino received the Ambassador of Truth award from the Center for Truth and Justice in recognition of her work on a Universal Jurisdiction case she initiated with a colleague and member of the Armenian diaspora in Argentina and her work co-founding the Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention.
