Professor Emmert Shares Expertise on Cryptocurrency with Indianapolis Media
01/11/2024
A Hamilton County, Indiana, man has been accused of operating an illegal cryptocurrency exchange in a small Caribbean country. IU McKinney Professor Frank Emmert, an expert in this area of law, was interviewed by Indianapolis television news station WISH.
Professor Emmert explained the role of the government agency tasked with investigating financial crimes, FinCEN, and possible next steps in the case. “It stands for the Financial Crimes and Enforcement Network,” Professor Emmert said in the story. “Their job primarily, but not exclusively, is to prevent money laundering and tax evasion basically. The Treasury wants to make sure that, on the one hand, our businesses and our citizens pay their taxes, our residents pay their taxes properly, and, on the other hand, that money is not used for crime. For example, terrorist financing or anything like that.”
Professor Emmert is the John S. Grimes Professor of Law and Director of the Center for International and Comparative Law at IU McKinney. He recently resumed his role as managing editor of the European Journal of Law Reform, which he co-founded in 1998. He serves on the Silicon Valley Arbitration & Mediation Center Task Force, which is developing guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence in dispute settlement procedures.
