Professor Robert Katz convened the 3rd Annual Law vs. Antisemitism Conference held on February 25-26, 2024 at Florida International University (FIU) College of Law. It featured 40 scholars from the U.S. and overseas specializing in law as well as Jewish studies, public policy, history, psychology, sociology, education, and demography, along with engaged practitioners and advocates. Its keynote speakers were Marc Stern, Associate General Counsel for the American Jewish Committee (AJC), and Rabbi David Saperstein, Former United States Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom. Over 90 people attended. The proceedings will be published in the FIU Law Review.
Professor Katz gave a presentation on “Group Defamation,” led a workshop on teaching antisemitism and the law, and introduced the keynote speakers. Panel topics included:
• How Recent Events Are Affecting The U.S. Legal Academy
• Pending Antisemitism Litigation
• Fighting Antisemitic Hate Speech with Law
• Antisemitism in Higher Education
• Antisemitism, Race and Gender
• Online Antisemitism & Holocaust Denial
• Antisemitic Conspiracy Theories & Stereotypes
• Christian Supremacy
Professor Katz founded the Law vs. Antisemitism Conference to provide an outlet for antisemitism law scholars to share their research and to promote dialogue and collaboration between scholars and interested practitioners, advocates, community leaders, and students. The 3rd annual conference built upon the achievements of the inaugural conference, held at IU McKinney in 2022, and the second conference held at Lewis & Clark School of Law in 2023.
Professor Katz researches the intersection of law and antisemitism. He is writing Antisemitism and the Law, the first casebook on the subject, which explores how law propagates antisemitism and can be used to combat it. To be published by Carolina Academic Press, the book will support an upper-level course. Professor Katz is Senior Research Fellow at the Anti-Defamation League’s Center for Antisemitism Research and Director of the Center for the Study of Law and Antisemitism.
