IU McKinney's National Tax Moot Court Team Places Fourth
04/03/2024
The IU McKinney team of Caitlyn Morrison, Josh Brandle, and Jacob Todd placed fourth in the National Tax Moot Court competition. The team was coached by Trent Nielson. The event took place March 7 through 9 at Stetson University College of Law in Gulfport, Florida.
“This was an entirely student-led effort, and they did a terrific job of representing IU McKinney on the national stage,” said Professor Stephanie Hoffer. She is the Lawrence A. Jegen III Chair in Tax Law at IU McKinney. “We are lucky to have such motivated and talented students in tax!”
Todd indicated he has a burgeoning interest in tax law and an existing interest in litigation, so when he was asked to be part of the team, “saying yes was a no-brainer,” he said. The experience confirmed his genuine enjoyment of litigation, he said.
Nielson was asked to coach the team by Morrison, his 2023 Anderson Moot Court 7th Circuit competition teammate. “National competitions are an excellent way for students to meet new people within the law school; meet new students, faculty, and attorneys from different law schools; and develop advocacy skills by arguing in front of judges and attorneys from jurisdictions other than Indiana,” Nielson said. Taking part in such competitions is also good for networking, he said. The team argued in front of and had dinner with three U.S. Tax Court judges.
