Meet IU McKinney Student Mayor Thomas Estabrook
04/23/2024
Mayor Thomas Estabrook is the mayor of Bicknell, Indiana. He is a 2L in IU McKinney’s evening division.
Any lawyers in your family?
No lawyers in my family. I am a first-generation college student.
What made you decide you wanted to go to law school? And what brought you to IU McKinney in particular? What has your experience been like as a student at IU McKinney?
I have always wanted to practice law. The main motivator was coming back home to Bicknell and filling the role as a local attorney. The need recently increased when the only local attorney in Bicknell retired. Having reliable legal expertise in rural communities helps them grow and gives residents options for legal service without having to travel long distances.
I chose McKinney because it came well recommended by legal professionals that I know. The part-time evening program is the only program like it in the region, and it accommodates my full-time work and family responsibilities. McKinney's cost of attendance is also very reasonable.
What’s been the biggest adjustment you’ve had to make in your life since you started law school?
The biggest adjustment has been moving my life around to account for the 2-hour drive from home to campus. The obligations of law school also impact how I manage my time with my wife and son and balance other community activities.
What are your plans for after law school?
After graduation, I intend to return to Bicknell to practice privately with an emphasis on property, wills, estates and trusts, and local government.
