Casey Seaton's Book Details Life on Police Force
06/20/2024
Casey Seaton, J.D. ’16, has written a book about his life as a police officer. Titled Between Mayberry and the Military, the book is a memoir about Seaton’s time serving in the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. Seaton now teaches law at the IMPD training academy.
As senior officers were getting ready to leave the force, many expressed regret at not having kept a written record of their stories and perspectives from throughout their careers, Seaton said. Hearing those comments made him decide to start writing about his career right from the start. “Writing became a way to remember stories worth sharing with friends and family. It also became a healthy release from the heavy reality of policing. Eventually, writing evolved into this deeper, broader form, lending perspective about the profession through real accounts, personal anecdotes, historical asides, social commentary, and explanations of the practices of one big city department interwoven with my own life,” Seaton said.
With goals of promoting change in the police and society, Seaton said he hopes his book spreads the word about what’s actually going on with policing from his boots-on-the-ground perspective.
