Sonja Rice Named Assistant Dean of Student Affairs at IU McKinney

Sonja Rice, J.D. ’07, has been named assistant dean of the Office of Student Affairs at IU McKinney. Rice took on the role June 1 after serving in it on an interim basis during the 2023-2024 academic year.
Rice received her undergraduate degree from Purdue University, after which she worked in the public and private sectors. She started her public service career in the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, then moved to the private sector where she worked as director of financial affairs at Derrickson Financial Group.
During her nearly 17 hears at IU McKinney, Rice has served in a variety of roles, including Egypt Program coordinator and director, director of Special Projects, and assistant dean for Institutional Data and Reporting. She has taken on added interim roles when asked, including interim assistant dean of Professional Development, and two stints in the Office of Students Affairs. In addition, she has served on numerous law school committees, including the Assessment Committee, the ABA Reaccreditation Committee, and the Admissions Committee. Rice also serves with Professor Joel Schumm, J.D. ’98, and Professor Lahny Silva on the Rural Justice Initiative.
