MaryEllen Kiley Bishop, J.D. ’82, has received the IUAA President's Award for her lifetime of service as an alumna of Indiana University. The IUAA President’s Award was established to pay tribute to the most dedicated alumni volunteers. It is the highest award given by the association to a volunteer leader.
“On behalf of the IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law, congratulations to MaryEllen Bishop! Her service, dedication, and commitment to Indiana University is exemplary and wide ranging,” said IU McKinney Dean Karen E. Bravo. “Her service, dedication and commitment to the law school has also been extraordinary. I am delighted to see her honored with this award and join with the Indiana University community in expressing our gratitude and congratulations to her.”
Bishop has long been an advocate for IU and its causes. Her interest in the quality and advancement of the IU Indianapolis campus began when she enrolled as a student at IU McKinney School of Law. She was passionate about the role of the Indianapolis campus in the IU system and was chair of the chancellor’s advisory counsel. Over the years, she actively supported the Regatta, IUPUI Top 100, and the IUPUI Alumni Leaders Dinner and Athletics Hall of Fame.
A partner at Cohen Garelick & Glazier in Indianapolis, Bishop earned a bachelor's in business from the IU Kelley School of Business before pursuing her J.D. from IU McKinney. She served on the law school’s Board of Visitors and Alumni Association board.
Bishop chaired the IU Alumni Association, served on the IU Athletics Committee, and the steering committee of the Colloquium for Women of IU. She also served on the board of the IU Foundation and its Women's Philanthropy Leadership Council. She served as co-chair of the IU School of Medicine Planned Giving Committee.
Bishop was first elected to the IU Board of Trustees in 2010 and was elected vice chair in 2021. She is the first woman in IU history to serve as chair of the board, having served as interim chair in 2013.
