Meet IU McKinney Master of Laws Student Syed Arafat Ahmed
08/21/2024
Syed Arafat Ahmed was a litigator in India before enrolling in the Master of Laws program at IU McKinney.
Where are you from originally?
I am originally from India.
Where did you do your legal studies?
I completed my undergraduate studies in India at PRR College of Law, affiliated with Osmania University. My law college was the first private law college in my state.
What made you want to become a lawyer?
My passion for law was two-fold, one driven by the daily news of injustices being meted out to people and I used to combust internally. I felt compelled to make a difference through the legal profession. The other was for knowledge.
What were you doing before you decided to pursue a Master of Laws degree?
Before pursuing a Master of Laws degree, I was actively practicing law, litigating criminal and civil cases in court. I thoroughly enjoyed litigation, as it sharpens and polishes one's mind.
What made you decide to pursue an LL.M.?
The ink of scholars is more precious than the blood of martyrs. My thirst for knowledge drove me to pursue an LL.M. While Indian and English laws are similar, I wanted to study American law, as it contrasts with Indian and English legal systems, and to become a licensed attorney.
What made you decide on IU McKinney for your graduate degree?
I chose IU McKinney because of its consecutive listings and rankings, especially for the LL.M. degree, by The International Jurist for the best LL.M. program. Additionally, the school's downtown location provides more job opportunities for graduates. If I could rewind my life, I would come to the U.S. and pursue a J.D. from McKinney, as it would give me more detailed knowledge of law. Nevertheless, where there is a will, there is a way.
What's your experience been like at IU McKinney?
Simply put, THE BEST. McKinney takes care of everything, from crafting resumés to organizing job fairs and providing guidance for bar exams. The combination of great professors and wonderful staff is perfect for becoming an attorney.
What's your favorite thing about Indianapolis?
Americans! I’ve always been telling people, and I reiterate, I always knew that Americans are very humble, kind, helpful, and highly respectful. When I arrived here, you exceeded my expectations. In the company of kind people, even a dungeon can feel cozy.
