10/15/2024
IU McKinney Professor Lahny Silva received the inaugural Community Activist Award from the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office. She was honored during an event on October 9.
Professor Silva was recognized for her dedication to making Indianapolis a safer and more just community and instilling these values in the next generation of lawyers. During the presentation, she and her team spoke about the many the ways people can help reduce recidivism and what they are actively doing to ensure our formerly incarcerated neighbors receive the support they need to move forward with their lives.
Professor Silva is the director of IU McKinney’s Re-Entry Clinic at IU McKinney. Clinic students, who must be certified legal interns, work as mentors to federal probationers and provide community outreach and legal representation in underserved areas in Indianapolis. In 2023, she was named a Chancellor’s Professor and received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Civic Engagement in recognition of her work in this area.
