11/08/2024
Volume 58, Issue Number 1 of the Indiana Law Review begins with three tributes to the late Chancellor Emeritus Gerald L. Bepko. He died September 5, 2023, at age 83.
The tribute section begins with a piece written by Chancellor Emeritus Bepko’s daughter, Arminda B. Bepko, who wrote about “The Value of a Legal Education.” In the piece, she describes her father’s path to his legal career and how dedicated he was to his students.
“Reflections on the Decanal Career of Chancellor Emeritus Gerald L. Bepko,” by Professor of Law Emeritus Jeffrey W. Grove. Grove served as associate dean of academic affairs, acting dean, associate dean for Graduate Studies, and as the director of the Chinese Law Summer Program. Professor Emeritus Grove wrote about Bepko’s unselfish leadership style, looking for ways to give credit to others rather than claim it for himself.
The final piece in the tribute section, “Continually Lighting the Way: Remembering Jerry Bepko,” was written by Professor of Law Emeritus Andrew R. Klein. Klein now serves as dean and professor of law at Wake Forest University School of Law. He served as dean at IU McKinney and as interim chancellor of IUPUI. Klein describes teaching the Leadership and Law seminar at IU McKinney with Bepko.
Bepko, who served as dean of the McKinney School of Law from 1981-1986, also became the longest-serving chancellor of Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), leading IU’s Indianapolis campus from 1986 to 2003. He also served as interim president of Indiana University from January 1, 2003, to August 31, 2003.
