IU McKinney Celebrates Alumni Honored by Indianapolis Bar Association
11/26/2024
IU McKinney is proud of the alumni who were honored by the Indianapolis Bar Association during the organization’s annual recognition breakfast. In addition to the 23 IBA members recognized for practicing law for 50 years, four alumni were singled out for some of the association’s highest honors.
D. Brooke Smith, J.D. ’14, was named the IBA’s Young Lawyer of the Year. Smith is a member at the Indianapolis office of Stoll Keenon Ogden, where she practices business litigation, typically involving business torts, representing individuals, single-member LLCs, and larger, complex organizations in state and federal courts.
Wayne C. Turner, J.D. ’85, received the Professionalism Award. Turner is a founding partner of Hoover Hull Turner and a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. His practice has been business litigation in federal and state trial and appellate courts. He is a magna cum laude graduate of IU McKinney.
The Honorable Marie L. Kern, J.D. '98, received the Magistrate Deborah Shook Award. After law school, she worked as a Marion County Public Defender for three years and even after leaving the agency for private practice, still took public defender felony cases on a part-time basis. For the past ten years, she has organized a biannual Mediation Day aimed at providing parents in paternity cases with no-to-low cost assistance.
