vernor Mike Braun issued an executive order requiring the Indiana Department of Health to publicly release the reports filed after an abortion is performed in the state. Professor Renée M. Landers, the Visiting McKinney Family Chair in Health Law at IU McKinney, talked about the order for a news story in Indiana Citizen.
The order doesn’t explicitly state that the reports are public records, but instead mandates that all state agencies “fully and faithfully” execute Indiana’s abortion laws, including the submission of terminated pregnancy reports.
Professor Landers, who is an expert in health law privacy, said she wasn’t surprised by the executive order’s obscurity. In the piece, she said she sees the order as a political statement rather than an attempt to establish policy or procedure.
Professor Landers is a professor of law at Suffolk University Law School and is the Faculty Director of the school’s Health and Biomedical Law Concentration and the Master of Science in Law Life Sciences program.
