02/24/2025
IU McKinney Professor Gerard Magliocca is the winner of the Erwin N. Griswold Book Prize, presented by the Supreme Court Historical Society. Professor Magliocca is being honored for his book, Washington’s Heir: The Life of Bushrod Washington.
The award is a $5,000 cash prize sponsored by the law firm JonesDay. Professor Magliocca also will be invited to give a lecture about the book in the United States Supreme Court’s courtroom.
The Supreme Court Historical Society awards the book prize occasionally when a book about the history of the court is published and considered sufficiently noteworthy to merit the recognition. The prize is named for Erwin N. Griswold, who served as chair of the society from 1987 until his death in 1994. Griswold served as dean of Harvard Law School and a six-year tenure as solicitor general of the United States, in addition to working as a partner at the law firm of Jones Day Reavis & Pogue.
Professor Magliocca is a Distinguished Professor and the Samuel R. Rosen Professor of Law at IU McKinney and a nationally known expert in constitutional law. He is recognized as the world’s leading voice on the original meaning and application of Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. He is the author of five books, the latest of which, Washington’s Heir: The Life of Bushrod Washington, was published by Oxford University Press in early 2022. He also is the author of over 30 articles on constitutional law and intellectual property.
