06/12/2025
Nina Werling works in Indiana University’s Office of Clinical Research. She’s a student in the Master of Jurisprudence program at IU McKinney.
Where are you from originally? Where did you do your undergraduate and/or graduate studies?
I am originally from Lafayette, Indiana. I completed my Associate of Applied Science in paralegal studies at Ivy Tech Community College and my Bachelor of Science in business administration at Indiana University.
What are you doing now?
I work in IU’s Office of Clinical Research as a senior contracts officer. My primary responsibility is to negotiate industry-funded clinical research contracts.
What drew you to this field? What do you like most about your job?
I sort of fell into clinical research right after completing my associate’s degree, and I have not looked back since. I really enjoy feeling like I am playing a role in improving patient access to life-saving or life-changing therapies.
What prompted you to pursue a Master of Jurisprudence degree at IU McKinney?
I feel that learning is a life-long endeavor and I highly value education. Also, I enjoy my work and want to progress in my career. Based on my interests and career choice, pursuing a MJ degree just makes sense for me.
How have you been able to tailor your studies to your career interests?
The MJ program provides a diverse offering of classes. For me, I am able to take advantage of the contracts, healthcare, and dispute resolution related classes, which line up well with my career and interests.
What's your experience been like as a student at IU McKinney?
Attending law school has been a challenge! I have been tested mentally and emotionally and pushed out of my comfort zone. That said, I feel like I have grown as a person, and I have gained some valuable skills along the way. The law school staff and professors are amazing.
