Upcoming Events at IU McKinney Have Sports Law Theme
03/08/2016
The Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law will host three events this Spring that will delve into varying aspects of sports law, including sports wagering, who owns the game of soccer, and the business and law of intercollegiate athletics.
First up will be the Indiana International & Comparative Law Review Symposium on March 11. The topic is “Fair or Foul Play: Contemporary Issues in Sports Wagering and Electronic Gambling.” Attorneys with expertise in this area of the law, including one based in Las Vegas, along with two members of the Indiana General Assembly, will discuss the issues brought about by gaming on fantasy sports, and whether such games are skill based or purely based upon chance.
“Laws of the Game: Who Owns Soccer?” will be the topic under discussion during the Center for Intellectual Property Law and Innovation’s Distinguished Lecture Series event on March 29. Professor Michael J. Madison of the University of Pittsburgh School of Law will blend two of his passions, copyright and soccer. “Soccer is one of the largest and broadest cultural phenomena on the planet, but IP law touches it only here and there,” he said. “I will take a novel, 360-degree look at a sport that I have played, coached, and watched for almost 50 years that is reaching ever-greater levels of popularity in the U.S.”
“Business, Law, and Intercollegiate Athletics” will be the subject of the evening on April 14 at the law school. Panelists will include NCAA Executive Vice President of Regulatory Affairs Oliver Luck; IU Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass, ’84; Horizon League Deputy Commissioner Julie Roe Lach, ’04; and Gene Marsh, of counsel at Jackson Lewis, who has focused on collegiate sports work for 20 years.
All of these events are free and open to the public with a registration. See details on each individual event for information on continuing legal credit. To learn more about these and other upcoming events at the law school, visit the IU McKinney website.
