Professor Boyne Named Mosaic Faculty Fellow

Professor Shawn Boyne has been chosen for the first cohort of Mosaic Faculty Fellows for the 2016-27 academic year. The program is part of Indiana University’s Mosaic Active Learning Initiative and is designed to develop a network of faculty who are trained to teach in active learning spaces. These spaces are diverse, technology-rich environments that are designed to enhance the classroom experience through engagement, collaboration, and new approaches to teaching. The goal is to improve student learning by actively engaging them in the process. The Faculty Fellows make a one-year commitment to attend the program’s training activities and contribute to the development of learning spaces throughout the campus.
The program will kick off on September 9 with the inaugural Mosaic Luncheon to be held on the IUPUI campus. Executive Vice Chancellor Kathy Johnson and Associate Vice President for Learning Technologies Stacy Morrone, will speak at the event about the role of the Mosaic Initiative in the context of the broader Indiana University community and at IUPUI in particular. There will be monthly sessions held throughout the academic year.
Earlier this year, IU McKinney Ruth Lilly Law Library Director Miriam Murphy and Professor Boyne submitted a successful grant application to renovate and upgrade the technology in one of the law school classrooms into an active learning space. By participating in the Mosaic program, Boyne hopes to acquire the skills necessary to introduce interested law school faculty to these new instructional strategies and technologies. The project is also designed to produce evidence-based teaching by encouraging faculty to study how these new spaces and instructional approaches affect student learning.
Professor Boyne is a former prosecuting attorney and practiced for several years as a defense attorney before pursuing her career in academia. She is a scholar of comparative law who has previously presented her work at Yale University, the University of Virginia, and Washington & Lee's School of Law, as well as in Austria, Germany, and England. Professor Boyne teaches a seminar in Comparative National Security Law at IU McKinney and serves as co-chair of the Global Crisis Leadership Forum. She is one of the founding members of the Comparative Law Professors blog.
