Two IU McKinney Professors Speak at Legal Ethics Conference at Fordham

IU McKinney Professors Margaret Tarkington and Shawn Boyne appeared as panelists at the 7th annual International Legal Ethics conference held at Fordham Law School July 14-16. The conference brought together close to 400 scholars from 60 different countries who share a commitment to teaching future lawyers to practice ethically.
Professor Tarkington, who teaches professional responsibility and civil procedure, moderated and presented on a panel titled "Approaching Free Speech and Lawyer Regulation." The panel explored the numerous contexts in which regulations on attorney and judicial speech seem at odds with established doctrines of the First Amendment. Professor Tarkington's research has been published in the Georgetown Law Journal, the Boston College Law Review, the UC Davis Law Review, and the Utah Law Review, among others. Her recent work develops a new methodology for analyzing the free speech rights of lawyers that works to preserve the essential role of attorneys in the U.S. justice system.

Professor Boyne participated on a panel exploring the topic of "Ethics in Criminal Advocacy." That panel included six scholars who write at the intersection of criminal procedure and ethics. The panel discussed recent developments in criminal practice ethics from a comparative perspective. Professor Boyne talked about Germany's historically poor track record in prosecuting rape cases as well as the motivation behind that country's new sexual assault legislation.
