IU McKinney Event Considers 'The True Solution in the U.S. Immigration System'

The Indiana International and Comparative Law Review Symposium centered on a discussion of “The True Solution to the U.S. Immigration System.” The event took place at IU McKinney on March 30.
Darwinson Valdez, an IU McKinney 3L who is the Executive Symposium Editor for this year’s program, said he was concerned about people who live in the shadows of society because of their immigration status. “This year, my goal was to capture a topic that is relevant to the international community and discuss some solutions to the problem,” Valdez said. Since choosing the topic, “a lot has happened in the United States, and that forced me to be flexible and consider other issues, such as the implementation of immigration law and the impact of the new immigration policy in local government.”
The program’s first presenter, Evelyn H. Cruz, talked about “The Immigrant Visa Process and What It Takes to Become a Legal Permanent Resident.” Cruz is clinical professor of law at Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University, where she is the director of the immigration clinic.
“Compassionate Migration and Regional Policy in the Americas” was presented by John Shuford. He is director of the Institute for Hate Studies at Gonzaga University. He received a J.D. and a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Oregon.
IU McKinney’s Professor Linda Kelly, director of the law school’s Immigration Clinic, offered “A Conversation about Refugees and Domestic Violence Protection.” She is the M. Dale Palmer Professor of Law, and has written extensively on issues surrounding immigration law as well as domestic violence and the treatment of domestic violence in immigration law.
The Indiana International and Comparative Law Review is a student-edited law journal devoted to the study and analysis of current international legal issues and events. It has been published since 1991.
