Students Honor Champions of Diversity at 7th Annual Event

Law students, an alumnus, and a member of the faculty were honored as Champions of Diversity during the seventh annual Diversity Dinner on March 1. The event took place at the Columbia Club in downtown Indianapolis.
The event is the work of three student groups at IU McKinney: Black Law Students Association (BLSA), Hispanic Law Society (HLS), and Asian Law Students Association (ALSA). These groups have won IU McKinney's Student Organization Award for Collaboration of the Year for their work on this event several years' running. The dinner allows students, attorneys, faculty, staff, alumni, and others to connect and build relationships with individuals and groups that embrace and promote diversity.
Those named Champions of Diversity were:
Professor Carrie Hagan, for her work in the Indianapolis community and with the IU McKinney Re-Entry Fair. The students chose her for the "great support she has provided to all organizations," said BLSA president Eric Hewlett. Alan Mills, '82, for his support of organizations that promote diversity. In addition, Hewlett said, Mills has been known to open his home to events for organizations that promote diversity, frequently meets with students for coffee, and provides many opportunities for students.
IU McKinney 2L Tatiana Foote was recognized for her dedication to service throughout the Indianapolis community. "She is very active in school and we thought it was time for her work to be acknowledged," Hewlett said. In the photo at right, from left, are Terron, Foote, and Ingram.
IU McKinney 3L Stephen Rollins was honored for all of his work aimed at diversifying the profession. He also was recognized for his work establishing the Black Womens Appreciation Celebration, and his work in the community. In the photo at left, from left, are Danika Smith, Rollins, Ingram, and Terron.
The theme of this year's Diversity Dinner was "Building and Sustaining Peaceful Progress without Division." Judge Sheryl Lynch, '96, of the Marion Circuit Court, was the keynote speaker. Judge Lynch is the first African-American and first woman to be elected to the Marion Circuit Court, a post she won in 2014. An Indianapolis native, she completed her undergraduate studies at Indiana University in Bloomington before enrolling at IU McKinney.
