Professor Wilson Speaks to Norwegian Officials about IU McKinney's Collaborations in China
06/18/2019
Professor Wilson was invited to speak to a group of officials from Norway about the fruits of IU McKinney’s collaborations with law schools in China. Professor Wilson’s talk was part of a Forum held in Beijing on June 5.
Professor Wilson used IU McKinney’s experience in China to illustrate the many forms of collaboration that can result from relationships with Chinese law schools. IU McKinney’s work in China began in 1987 with the founding of the Chinese Law Summer Program (CLSP), which has been held at Renmin University of China Law School since 1998. From the foundation of the CLSP, IU McKinney created, with RUC Law School, the Joint Center for Asian Law Studies. Since 2010, the Joint Center has sponsored numerous academic conferences in China and in Indianapolis. Through the Joint Center, Professor Wilson has brought Chinese scholars to IU McKinney to conduct research. Since 2009, IU McKinney has hosted 42 scholars from 23 law schools in 14 cities across China. Through the Joint Center, nine professors have been brought from China to Indianapolis to teach courses to IU McKinney students. Other benefits of IU McKinney’s work in China include internships for IU McKinney students with Chinese law firms and reciprocal scholarships for our students.
The officials who attended Professor Wilson's talk included the Director General, Deputy Director General along with several senior members from the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research, the Norwegian Agency for International Cooperation and Enhancement in Higher Education, the Secretary-General of Universities Norway, the Vice-Rector for Global Relations at the University of Bergen, and two representatives from the Norwegian Embassy in Beijing.
The University of Bergen Faculty of Law is an affiliate of the CLSP and sends students to the program each summer. The University of Bergen is also home of the Norwegian China Law Center. In 2017, Professor Wilson was asked to speak at the Opening Ceremony for the Center in Bergen. A story featuring Professor Wilson appears on the Norwegian China Law Center's website.
