Statement from Dean Andrew R. Klein and Dean-designate Karen E. Bravo
06/04/2020
Dear McKinney family:
This is an immensely difficult time. While paralyzed by a global pandemic, we witnessed the senseless killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor -- more people of color dying for no reason. It is impossible not to react with anger, frustration, and sadness.
Earlier this week President McRobbie and Chancellor Paydar made strong statements on behalf of Indiana University. We join their call to fight injustice by turning the energy of our frustration into a movement for positive change. As a law school, we have a special obligation to do so. Our mission is to educate tomorrow’s leaders, the very people who will determine whether our system of justice works for all or only for some.
To our students, we know that you often look to us for guidance in challenging times. But today we also look to you. If our future is to be brighter than our present, you will lead the way. Indeed, one ray of hope during this week has been your voices. We have heard students express pain but tell us that McKinney classrooms are where they plan to chart a path forward. We have heard recent graduates tell us they are outraged but determined to use their position as lawyers for the greater good. We are proud that you are part of our law school family.
Yesterday, Atlanta’s mayor, Keisha Bottoms, said that “we as a people are strongest when we use our voices to heal our cities instead of using our hands to tear them down.” She is right. Let us grieve together and come together, determined to be people who will rise up and do better.
Do not hesitate to reach out at any time if you need support. In the days ahead, you will hear more from McKinney leaders as we seek to strengthen our community.
We stand with you, McKinney. Be well. Stay safe. Stay strong.
Sincerely,
Dean Andrew Klein & Dean-designate Karen Bravo
