IU McKinney 3L Max Mohr Working with WTC Indy on Global Webinar for National Association
07/02/2021
Max Mohr, a 3L at IU McKinney, is working on a project with the World Trade Center (WTC) Indianapolis that will promote training to developing nations to help attract investment and trade. Mohr is researching, writing, organizing, and making contacts as he helps WTC Indy create a webinar on how countries can improve sovereign risk ratings. The work has the potential to increase Indiana’s trade options and assist developing and developed countries with economic expansion. The webinar is expected to take place in September 2021.
Mohr is interested in a career in international business law after completing his legal education and is pursuing IU McKinney’s Corporate and Commercial Law Graduate Certificate. He was working on a note for the Indiana International & Comparative Law Review about blockchain and cryptocurrency in the international context with Professor Frank Emmert, who was acting as Mohr’s note advisor. Professor Emmert introduced Mohr to WTC Indy chairman Greg Zoeller. The work on the webinar fulfills part of the field work required for the certificate, Mohr said.
“I am thrilled to help WTC in its project designed to assist countries in proving their sovereign risk ratings,” Mohr said. “These ratings are crucial in enabling countries to participate in international trade and to enjoy economic growth. This effort helps Indiana businesses who want to increase international trade.”
WTC Indy has signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Association of Attorneys General to produce a global webinar to promote training offered to developing nations to reduce their risk ratings and attract more foreign direct investment. The global webinar is being produced by the Center for International Partnerships & Strategic Collaborations and will feature presenters from risk rating agencies and global development experts.Mohr is an intern at WTC Indy and working directly on the project. IU McKinney Professor Frank Emmert is supervising and preparing a contribution to the webinar.
IU McKinney has a close relationship with WTC Indy. The organization began offering pro bono and experiential learning opportunities to Master of Laws students in 2017, and the law school entered an agreement with the organization in 2018 to offer a seventh track to its Master of Laws program, International Trade Law.
"Internships at the WTC are open - in principle - to all students at McKinney and can be flexibly designed,” said Professor Emmert. He is the executive director of the Center for International and Comparative Law at IU McKinney. Students in the Master of Laws (LL.M.) Track in World Trade Law, however, have to complete no less than 6 credits of their 24 credit program doing work with the WTC Indianapolis over a period of no less than 6 months. This enables the students to accompany more substantial work assignments over a longer period of time and to become familiar not only with the trade-related aspects of legal work but also to meet a variety of stakeholders and build their own network of contacts, which often directly leads to job opportunities.” Professor Emmert is the faculty advisor for the LL.M. track in World Trade Law and the internship program. He teaches International Business Transactions, World Trade Organization Law, International Commercial Arbitration, International Investment Law, as well as European Union Law at IU McKinney.
