IU McKinney Alumni: Giving Back, Moving Forward

IU McKinney alumni are generous. Last fiscal year, alumni and donors contributed nearly $1.9 million to the IU Foundation to support of the law school—an amazing accomplishment that fuels the hopes and dreams of our students and supports faculty in making transformative impact.
Equally inspiring is the gift of time. Nearly 500 alumni contributed more than 1,500 hours of service during the 2024–25 academic year, working directly with students and faculty. From volunteering with Moot Court, to joining professors in the classroom, to serving on student organization panels, IU McKinney alumni help sustain what Dean Karen Bravo often calls our “margin of excellence.”
For Scott Oliver, J.D. ’16, partner at Lewis Kappes, volunteering is about paying it forward. “By working with the law school and its students, I get to give back in the same way others once invested in me. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing a student succeed and knowing the school provides the foundation for that success long after graduation.” Oliver provides countless hours of mentorship and often highlights his experiences on LinkedIn, encouraging others to get involved.
Lucy Frick, J.D. ’15, a public defender with the Marion County Public Defenders Agency, shares that her volunteer work has “made the legal profession feel more welcoming for students.” She views her involvement as an opportunity to personally connect with students while also introducing them to other professionals who can help guide their journey.
The rewards flow both ways. “I’m continually inspired by our students’ ability to balance so much,” says Chaka Coleman, J.D. ’22, principal at Obvion Consulting. “Volunteering with IU McKinney has been personally enriching, because it keeps me connected to both the institution and the broader legal community.”
