09/17/2025
IU McKinney Law welcomes two new visiting professors: Jordan Burton and Mark Stuaan.
Burton was appointed to the faculty as a visiting assistant clinical professor in fall 2025 after teaching Legal Communication and Analysis as an adjunct professor. His research interests include law school pedagogy and pedagogical innovations.
Before joining the faculty, Burton was a public-interest litigator specializing in family law and child welfare. He represented private, non-profit, and government clients, including at the Indiana Civil Rights Commission, Indiana Legal Services, and Kids’ Voice of Indiana.
Burton graduated with distinction from Indiana University, where he majored in Classical Civilizations. He received his law degree from the IU Maurer School of Law and served as a notes and comments editor for the Indiana Law Journal.
Stuaan joined the faculty as a visiting professor in January 2025. He received his J.D. From Southern Illinois University School of Law in 1981, having served as editor-in-chief of the SIU Law Review and receiving Order of Barristers recognition.
Following graduation from Southern Illinois University School of Law, Stuaan served as clerk to the chief judge in the Central District of Illinois, Robert D. Morgan, for about a year, until the judge took senior status.
Stuaan then worked as an associate in an insurance defense firm until 1983, when he became an Assistant United States Attorney in the Central District of Illinois. He was an assistant U.S. attorney until the end of 1987, when he resigned to run for office in 1988 as Peoria County state's attorney. After an unsuccessful run for office, Stuaan, his wife, and children moved to Indiana, where he served as an assistant U.S. attorney in the Southern District of Indiana from the end of 1988 until early 1999.
Stuaan joined Barnes & Thornburg as a partner in 1999, working in the litigation department, focusing on criminal defense work, primarily at the federal level. He retired from the practice of law in December 2024. He was a member of the adjunct faculty at IU McKinney for about 12 years before becoming a visiting professor of practice. As a McKinney faculty member, he has taught classes in White Collar Crime, Evidence, Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure: Adjudication.
