IU McKinney's Lambda Law Society Celebrates Decision
06/29/2015
Current and past executive board members of IU McKinney’s Lambda Law Society reunited to celebrate the Supreme Court ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges, by a 5-to-4 vote, that the United States Constitution guarantees a right to same-sex marriage. The decision was announced June 26.
Law students and their faculty advisors expressed their reactions to the ruling.
“When the decision came down I, for the first time, understood the phrase ‘overcome with joy,’” said Lambda board member Marcus McGhee. “You never really know how much of yourself you suppress until you no longer have to do it. It was on June 26, 2015, that I mustered up the courage to come out to the rest of my family and friends. It was also the day that I saw the legal minds that I've studied for the past three years come together to move this country towards a better day.” In the photo at left, from left are Marcus Alan McGhee, Alex Van Gorp, Lucy Frick, '15, and Jason Sprinkle, '15.
Lambda’s faculty advisor, Richard Humphrey, celebrated the ruling with his husband Jim Rohrer at a rally at the Indiana Statehouse on June 26. In the photo at right, from left are Rohrer and Humphrey.
“Jim and I could not be more thrilled at the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on gay marriage,” Humphrey said. “At last, LGBT couples everywhere will have the same privilege of their marriages being recognized, as heterosexual couples have always enjoyed. While the recent tragedy in South Carolina clearly demonstrates that we have a long way to go toward establishing human rights for all, this milestone will certainly stand as a symbol of what can be accomplished when rationality, understanding, and compassion prevail.”
