Professor Nguyen Presents, Conducts Training, and Assists with Drafting New Law in Vietnam

Professor Xuan-Thao Nguyen made several presentations and took part in the drafting of a new secured transactions law in Vietnam during Summer 2016.
Professor Nguyen worked with the Drafting Team from the Vietnam Ministry of Justice in Da Nang July 21-22. The photo at left shows Professor Nguyen in the second row at the far right. The group negotiated and drafted the Decree on Secured Transactions Law. The draft will later be submitted to the Office of the Prime Minister.
Professor Nguyen worked with the Vietnam Supreme People’s Court in training the judges and lawyers on judicial enforcement and remedies in secured transactions. The conference was sponsored by the World Bank Group/IFC, the Vietnam Supreme People’s Court and the Vietnam Banks Association, and was held in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. The photo at right shows Professor Nguyen speaking at the conference on July 29. The focus of her talk was judicial enforcement and remedies in secured transactions law.
In addition, she presented on the topic, “Access to Credit by Enterprises: Understanding Your Business and Access within the Secured Transactions Legal Framework,” at an event sponsored by the Vietnam Banks Association and the World Bank Group/IFC. This event was held in Ho Chi Minh City.
Professor Nguyen, who holds the Gerald L. Bepko Chair in Law, is the director of the IU McKinney Center for Intellectual Property Law and Innovation. She is an internationally recognized legal scholar, known for her expertise at the intersections of intellectual property, secured transactions, bankruptcy, licensing, and taxation. She recently received the Grant Gilmore Award from the American College of Commercial Finance Lawyers, an honor bestowed only eight times since its creation in 1992, in recognition of her scholarship.
