Professor Orentlicher Calls Lawmaker's Decision to Accept Job with Vaping Firm "Absolutely Troubling"
09/19/2016
State Representative Alan Morrison of Terre Haute has taken a job with a division of a vaping firm. He voted two years running for legislation that put one private company in control of who could manufacture e-liquid for sale in Indiana.
Morrison works for General Alarm Company, a division of Malhaupt’s. Malhaupt’s is based in Lafayette and is the sole manufacturer of liquids for electronic cigarettes in Indiana.
Professor David Orentlicher called the move “absolutely troubling” in a story about the lawmaker’s new job that was published in the September 16 edition of the Indianapolis Business Journal. Professor Orentlicher is a former Indiana legislator himself. “You shouldn't be leveraging your public office to get a new job. You’re supposed to be using your position to benefit your constituents,” he said.
Professor Orentlicher served in the Indiana House of Representatives from 2002 through 2008. He is the Samuel R. Rosen Professor at IU McKinney and co-director of the Hall Center for Law and Health. He also has taught at Princeton University and the University of Chicago Law School. He earned degrees in law and medicine at Harvard and specializes as well in health care law and ethics.
