Professor Waterhouse Column in 'Indianapolis Recorder' Considers Legitimacy of Not Voting as a Political Choice
10/21/2016
Professor Carlton Waterhouse weighs the option of not voting in an election when the voter believes the system has failed to address their needs in his latest column published in the Indianapolis Recorder. The piece was posted October 20.
The column was born from a discussion Professor Waterhouse had with a friend, who believes that not voting, as a response to a system that has repeatedly failed the voter, is a reasonable choice. Professor Waterhouse disagrees and explains why he sees voting as one tool among many that can be utilized for change.
Professor Waterhouse is a frequent columnist for the Indianapolis Recorder. He is a Dean’s Fellow and is director of the Environmental Energy and Natural Resources Law Program at IU McKinney. He is internationally recognized for his work on environmental justice and for his research and writing on reparations for historic injustices and state human rights violations.
