Professor Terry Presents at Conference in Rome

Professor Nicolas Terry (in the photo at left) presented at a conference offered by Aquilia Associazione scientifica in Rome, Italy. The conference, titled “La responsabilita medica e le funzioni della responsabilita civile nella societa contemporanea,” was attended by leading Italian and other European academics, practitioners, and judges. The examined the current state of medical malpractice law and policy in Italy. There is considerable concern about the current state of medical malpractice litigation in Italy, with indications that litigation and payments are increasingly accompanied by doubts about the availability of reasonably priced indemnity insurance. In his presentation, which took place on October 1, Professor Terry provided details about the U.S. medical malpractice system, explained how U.S. law approaches causation and damages issues, and commented on the problems surrounding tort reform.

Professor Terry is the Hall Render Professor of Law and executive director of the Hall Center for Law and Health. He testified before Congress on July 13 about the need for privacy protections for mobile health apps. He was invited by the White House to take part in the Precision Medicine Initiative Summit in February 2016. He also is a member of the Health IT Consumer Workgroup. His research interests lie primarily at the intersection of medicine, law, and information technology. His recent scholarship has dealt with health privacy, social media and health, big data, and health care fragmentation. He started the podcast, “The Week in Health Law” with Professor Frank Pasquale of the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law.
